YATU OUTGROWER SCHEME

YATU Foods has set up a partnership with the National Union for Small Scale Farmers in Zambia and have also engaged Vision Fund and other financers to support with the planting and harvesting of tea, coffee, ginger and lemon grass among 2,000 small scale farmers, by providing farming inputs requirements and a guaranteed offtake market of the farm produce. YATU will provide the farmers with an offtake market as well as add value and so expand the company's product offering from its current black tea to lemon and ginger flavors as well as coffee products and lemon-ginger drinks. Through this partnership, 2000 small-scale farmers will benefit from climate-smart agriculture practices and improve their well-being. The partnership is currently working to access funding that will enable the farming community to implement climate smart farming techniques. As it relates to the Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13), this partnership is directly aligned with the impact theme of climate change mitigation, with the strategic goal of mitigating climate change through sustainable agriculture, and the Zambia Climate Change Policy. The Ginger and Lemon Grass, have been known to improve soil fertility (nutrients) and help moisture retention in the soils where they are grown. YATU has identified and partnered with Sunray, a provider of solar-powered cold rooms and solar-powered irrigation pumps, to provide infrastructure for storing an array of produce that may be rented out to smallholder farmers.
