The Yawata Steel Project for Japan main objective is the rehabilitation of the Yawata Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. The Yawata Company is the oldest and largest steel company in Japan. It is one of the main suppliers of pig iron and semi-finished steel to other small steel companies. This project will replace the three obsolete plate mills with one modern plate-mill that will have a capacity of 360,000 tons per year, whereas the current three mills puts out a total of only 342,000 tons. Labor relations in recent years have been satisfactory and much effort is devoted to employee welfare in the community which is highly dependent on the stability of Yawata's operations. A large part of Japanese exports are to neighboring countries. The improved quality of the steel products will allow the Yawata company to broaden its markets both within and outside of Japan.
