Description
Description | 1. The project will build on previous and ongoing Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) interventions, and potentially covering urbancenters throughout the country based on the evolving security situation, accessibility and availability of funds. 2. The Projectaims at restoring water and sanitation services in selected urban areas, strengthen the capacity of urban water institutions inoperations and maintenance, and to improve water resources planning and monitoring in Yemen. The Project will focus on improvingthe resilience capacity of the urban water institutions by restoring and rehabilitating the damaged and deteriorated existing waterand sanitation facilities to maintain and improve services for the affected people in selected urban areas, strengthening therelevant institutions capacity by developing emergency response plans, training their staff, improving their technical andfinancial systems to maintain basic level of services during the challenging circumstances. In addition, the project supportimproving water resource planning and management, which is the most vulnerable due to water scarcity, low water quality and lack ofdata for better management and monitoring. 3. The project intends to strengthen the capacity to address urban flooding, waterscarcity, and sea water intrusion, mainly in coastal cities, by establishing water resources plans for the well fields at watershedand sub-basin levels, thereby reducing the abstraction of groundwater, and reducing the volume of untreated wastewater. This willin turn make the targeted communities and the WSS sector more resilient to the climate change–related threats of drought, floods, and saltwater intrusion. |
