‘Yesterday’s Girl’ is a fish-out-of-water drama for children with a historical and educational twist and plenty of room for comedy, offering an exploration of old Ireland contrasted with the now, while jam-packed with high stakes, intrigue and coming-of-age misadventures. Grounded but with a tinge of the supernatural, the series can be compared to ‘Round the Twist’, ‘Jumanji’ or ‘Stranger Things’, and has a core story that could be described as a younger, more poignant version of ‘Back to the Future’. A group of friends, led by ‘old soul’ Aodhan, open a long-buried time capsule and accidentally bring back a young girl, Fiadh, from 1600s Ireland to present day using an ancient Ogham stone. Able to converse with her ‘as Gaeilge’, they try to figure out how to fix the stone and get her back to her own time but struggle to assimilate Fiadh to modern day in the meantime, alerting suspicion from parents, school staff and other townsfolk. Initially completely lost in a time unfamiliar to her, Fiadh adapts to 2023, teaches the friend group about the Ireland she comes from, and falls in love with Aodhan. However, a distant descendant of Fiadh soon arrives, warning of the huge repercussions on existing history if Fiadh is not returned to her own time. The doomed romance between Fiadh and Aodhan turns even more bittersweet when Aodhan offers to go back in time with her, but the uncertain consequences on history pose a problem. Will Fiadh sacrifice her happiness to return to her old life for the sake of history? Will Aodhan take the risk of travelling to the past? Could a hidden enemy be wishing to bend history for their own gain? Or is mounting suspicion of Fiadh in the town threatening to tear them apart forever?
