Description

Description

The Yettinahole project involves the utilisation of forest land and requires compensatory afforestation (CA) land to be provided. Initially, 34.42 acres of land in Challakere taluk, Chitradurga district, was identified and approved for compensatory afforestation in 2015. However, the Karnataka government sought to change this land to a patch in Arasikere taluk, Hassan district, in 2016 as per the request of the user-agency, Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL). The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) regional committee recommended final clearance for the project with conditions to raise compensatory afforestation and mutate the land as reserved forest. In August 2025, the state government again changed the CA land to the patch in Hassan district and requested post facto approval, which was flagged as a violation by the MoEF&CC committee. The committee noted non-compliance and requested the government to submit details of excess forest land utilised and actions taken against officials involved in the violation.
