Young Lawyers Contest

The aim of the YLC is through the organisation of a contest, to bring together newly qualified lawyers from different EU countries and to give them tools to improve the respect of and the correct and uniform application of EU law in full respect of the rule of law, to exchange ideas and to discuss new perspectives in areas of common interest. 3 contests will be organised in English over 36 months. There will be 48 candidates per contest (144 in total) nominated by all cooperating national Bars. Candidates will be divided into teams of 4 contestants belonging to different Member States: 12 teams per contest. Each contest will be composed of 3 semi-finals and one final. Different Bars will each year host semi-finals for two half days.4 mixed teams per semi-final (16 contestants per semi-final) will contest against each other’s in front of 3 jurors nominated by ERA and its partners. The two best teams of each semi-finals (24 participants) will take part in a three-days final held at ERA (2 days) and at the General Court of the EU (1 day). The final will consist in a training on EU litigation, a negotiation exercise to select the best two teams for the moot court taking place at the General Court. Jurors will be nominated by ERA and its partners, adding two judges from the GC. Topics of the contest will be dealing with core elements of the work of defence of lawyers and contribute to the protection of the rule of law. The main expected results of the Project are as follows: enable young lawyers to receive a training on EU law and litigation and improve their skills by receiving advice from jurors; contribute to the protection of the rule of law, enhance interaction with colleagues from different EU MS and facilitate cross-border judicial cooperation between participants.
