Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository

cancelled

The US government chose Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a potential geological repository for dangerous high-level nuclear waste. The project aimed to bury radioactive waste in a deep structure designed to isolate it for thousands of years. However, the mountain holds cultural and spiritual significance for the Western Shoshone and Paiute peoples, leading to indigenous resistance and environmental concerns, especially about groundwater contamination and seismic risks. The project faced decades of impasse, public costs, legal challenges, and ultimately stalled without a definitive solution for nuclear waste storage.
