Yukon Grid Scale Battery Energy Storage System

This project consists of designing, purchasing and installing a new battery energy storage system (ESS) in Whitehorse, Yukon. The battery ESS would allow for storage of surplus intermittent grid-generated electricity (primarily hydropower) during off peak periods in order to meet electrical power demands during peak periods. In addition, the ESS will improve the reliability of service to customers on Yukon’s isolated grid, reduce the reliance on back-up power generated from diesel power plants, reduce outage times and grid disruptions, and, reduce GHG emissions through on-grid reliability improvements. This project increases Yukon’s capacity to manage more renewable energy and will also lead to an increased awareness of renewable energy storage in Yukon.
