Description

Description

Constructed a power plant to generate 946MW electricityThe Yulchon II CCPP construction site is located in the Yulchon Industrial Complex, 20-minute drive from Yeosu Airport. The Yulchon II CCPP is a large-scale power plant can generate 946MW electricity. As an EPC contractor, Hyundai E&C won the contract in charge of design, material purchase, construction, and test run. Along with two GTG units, two WHRB units, and a STG, we constructed intake and ditch structures required in using the sea water as coolant for an auxiliary boiler, water treatment facility, and STG.Halved the steam blowing periodThe steam provided to a steam turbine of the CCPP must be clean. If any foreign materials are contained, it is fatal to a turbine. Thus, a steam blowing work must be conducted to remove foreign materials by cleaning the inside of a steam pipe. If steam quality reaches a certain level, a constructor can work on a test run of the steam turbine after stopping the steam blowing work. The original schedule for the steam blowing was initially set as 20 days. However, Hyundai E&C conducted a preliminary work of cleansing the target piping section with chemical to shorten the period. Moreover, Hyundai E&C ensured a feed water pump to function properly, supplying pure water (water with no impurities) for the mass production of steam. We received sufficient amount of pure water in cooperation with adjacent factories at the site to prevent the steam blowing work from being interrupted due to the shortage of pure water. Hyundai E&C also improved the steam blowing process and made efforts to integrate and operate the target piping section. With all these efforts, we were able to shorten the blowing period to 10 days. Made the utmost effort to shorten the construction periodHyundai E&C were bombarded with a lot of concerns at the construction site since we had to conduct pile driving during the rainy season. The site created a condition for stable pile driving by covering with a tent after laying crushed stone on the entire section to minimize the percolation of rainwater through soil. By working day and night as if the lights installed in a baseball stadium were on, we were able to complete about 2900 pieces of pile driving in 40 days. Hyundai E&C also encountered an obstacle in constructing a ditch. The ditch installation required a tunnel shield construction method. It was creating a submarine tunnel (pipe diameter: 3.8m, length: 1.5km) with the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In the middle of the tunnel, we discovered discontinuous fault zones consisting of mudflat containing a lot of seawater. The construction was interrupted due to the inflow of voluminous seawater. The responsible person sought solutions by meeting with marine geologists for consultation.  The Yulchon II CCPP was successfully completed thanks to the abundant experience and knowhow of the employees of Hyundai E&C and cooperation with other construction companies. It would provide people with sufficient electricity by serving as “rain” for a “drought.”
