Description | The Yuma Desalting Plant is an antiquated facility in southwestern Arizona built to treat salty agricultural drainage water (bypass flow) so it could be returned to the Colorado River and sent to Mexico. The plant operated briefly in 1993 and has mostly been dormant since. Restarting the plant at one-third capacity would divert approximately 25% of the bypass flow sustaining the Ciénega de Santa Clara wetland, threatening the ecosystem and bird habitats. The operation would require at least $670-704 million and could have significant environmental and diplomatic impacts. |
