Zambia - Health Sector Support Project II

In response to the economic crisis of the 1980s, the government of Zambia (GRZ) formulated the Health Sector Strategic Plan (1998-2000), the purpose of which was to achieve equity of access to health facilities by all Zambians. The project under review was a continuation of Bank assistance to Zambia in this sector. The rationale of the project was to enhance access to health care and to improve quality of health care for rural communities in a sector-wide approach to health care delivery system through improved primary health care infrastructure, provision of safe drinking water, development of preventive maintenance policy, support to human resource development and capacity building at both the central and district levels. The project conformed with Bank Group Health Sector Policy and its lending strategy for Zambia. It is expected that the project would enhance access to health care of the rural communities in particular.
