Zambia - Support to the National AIDS Control Programme

The proposed project responds to Zambia’s need to implement the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework. The project will be the third institutional support intervention (Malawi, approved in December 1999 and Mozambique, approved in December 2000) funded by the Bank Group in the countries in Southern Africa. It will support Government’s efforts, at the national level, to coordinate the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework (2001 – 2003). The project will strengthen the organizational, management and leadership capacity of the National AIDS/STD/TB Secretariat (NAS) and associated institutional components of the new institutional framework in order to successfully implement the strategic objectives of the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework. It has one component (i.e. institutional support) and will encompass the following activities: provision of technical assistance, training, consultant services, equipment and operating costs. The project will be implemented over a period of 24 months, and its cost is estimated at UA 1,078,956.
