In 1989, Murchison SA bought land for the terminal, on the outskirts of Zarate, some 100 km north-west of Buenos Aires. After various pieces of legislation from the Argentinean government paved the way for further port privatizations, Terminal Zarate SA was founded and construction of the substructure for a port installation started. Terminal Zarate started operations in June 1996 and handles an average of 17,000 cars per month. In 1997, the terminal handled more than 200.000 vehicles, of which 153,000 were destined for exports and 48,000 for imports. The car terminal has involved an investment of US$ 25 million, and has been developed in association with Cotia Trading under the joint-venture Auto Terminal Zarate. In 2000, the company started the construction of a new container terminal with capacity of 100,000 TEUs. This new facility requires an investment of US$ 20 million and should be completed by mid-2001. None None
