Description

Description

In December 1998 Berlinwasser Holdings AG received a 12.5 year build-operate-own-transfer contract for a wastewater treatment facility in Zelenograd, Russia. In 1998 the area of Zelenograd did not have its own treatment plant and was using a non-central facility located 40 kilometers northwest of the city of Moscow. Continued local growth meant that by 1998 the treatment capacity of the existing plant was exceeded and the discharge quality no longer complied with the required purification standards. German WTE was commissioned to design, finance, build and operate a new wastewater treatment plant with an average capacity of 140,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. The new plant would have the potential to serve approximately 400,000 connected inhabitants. The initial cost of the project was projected to be US$70 million. Financial closure was reached in December 1998. The treatment plant started operation at the end of 2000 In October 2003, the subsidiary of BerlinWasser (WTE Wassertechnik GmbH) responsible for the project was acquired by the Austrian group EVN AG.
