Description
Description | Zemlya (Ukrainian: Земля, meaning land) is a pivotal element of Ukrainian identity, symbolizing the connection to the land, agriculture, and rural life, and reflecting love and reverence for the country’s landscapes and natural beauty. In light of the on-going war in Ukraine, and numerous human rights being violated, millions of people find themselves seeking refuge beyond the borders of their homeland. Since 2022, it has become increasingly evident that Europe is subject to a large-scale population movement in urgent need of support, with currently over 6.2 million refugees from Ukraine dispersed across Europe alone (source: UNHCR Ukraine Data Portal, available at https://data.unhcr.org/en/situations/ukraine (data as of 16 December 2024)). However, the process of integration is not an easy one and refugees often encounter various obstacles that can make it difficult for them to fully participate in and contribute to their host communities. Challenges such as language barriers, cultural differences, discrimination and prejudice, no access to education, difficulties entering the labor market, legal and administrative obstacles, trauma, social isolation, and many others. With this project, we aim to go beyond immediate relief efforts and address the long-term well-being of Ukrainian refugees when integrating into host societies. Our aim is to develop sustainable inclusion methods tailored to the individual needs of Ukrainian refugees, ensuring quality integration into European communities, as well as strengthening the currently strained, but much needed systems of support. By doing so, we hope to increase both the well-being Ukrainian displaced persons and the social cohesion in host communities. Through this initiative, we acknowledge the shared responsibility of European nations in promoting stability, peace, and justice in the face of adversity. |
