Zimbabwe - Railways Project I

The Project is part of an investment Programme formulated in 1989 for the rehabilitation and modernization of the railways. The Programme will help to reduce the economic cost of rail transport in Zimbabwe and stem the cost of diversion of traffic from rail to road. It will help to relax the current transport constraint on production in sectors where road transport of inputs or outputs are not feasible, improve the level of cost recovery in NRZ and reduce its claims on Government resources. The Project Outputs will be: (i) Replacement of Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) supervision equipment on the Harare-Mutare line including a flew telecommunications carrier; (ii) New passenger coaches (56 units); and iii) Portable radios for train crew communications (311 units). The estimated cost of the Project is UA 46.38 million net of taxes.
