Zimbabwe - Telecommunication II

The proposed project is an integral part of the Telecommunications Sector Investment Program (TSIP), which aims to ensure optimal use of installed capacity; increase network efficiency; improve service quality; reduce the number of potential subscribers on waiting lists by equipping the project area with 30,000 pairs of main distributors (MDF); and assist the PTC in achieving the objectives of the TSIP. The TSIP for the period 1992-1997 was prepared by the PTC as part of the Structural and Economic Adjustment Programme (ESAP), with a view to rehabilitating and developing the national telecommunications network. The project will provide the TPC with 248,000 line protection units, 131,200 km of cable pairs, a digital microwave system, a cellular radio link network, a frequency management system and a sound distribution network, in order to increase the efficiency of the national network and further reduce costs incurred by the Government and commercial and residential subscribers. The total cost of the project is estimated at UA 52.64 million.
