Description

The overall objective of the Power Rehabilitation Project is to enhance the ability of Zambia's electricity supply industry to provide electricity at least cost and in an efficient, sustainable manner to stimulate more and inclusive growth in the Zambian economy. The project components include 1) rehabilitating hydropower stations, as well as distribution and transmission systems to improve technical efficiency and the quality and reliability of supply; 2) implementing a rehabilitation and development program for the Gwembe-Tonga, a group unsuccessfully resettled during Kariba Dam construction; 3) improving the efficiency of ZESCO, the national electricity utility, through capacity-building measures and a commercialization plan based on corporate autonomy and management accountability, to enhance the company's resource mobilization and include such actions as separating the accounting for generation, transmission, and distribution; and 4) providing technical assistance to establish an institutional and regulatory framework promoting private participation and implementing Zambia hydropower and transsmission policies.
