Railroad Switch Tie Specifications • Treated hardwood cross ties without holes . • Anti - split devices installed . • Grade : American Railway Engineering and Maintenance - of - Way Association ( AREMA ), Manual for Railway Engineering , Volume 1 , Chapter 3 ., Part 2 , Page 3 - 2 - 1 West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau ( W . C . L . I . B .) Grading Rules Number 17 ., Chapter 6 , Paragraph 192 - A , Page 175 . • Treatment : American Wood Preservers Association ( A . W . P . A .) Book of Standards , Specifications C3 and C6 . o The preservative shall consist of a mixture , by volume , of 50 percent creosote oil and 50 percent residuum oil . As an alternative , 50 / 50 coal tar solution may be used . o Final readings to be entered on the treating report . Treating reports and charts become a permanent record maintained by the treating company with open access to ARRC personnel . |
