Description | Those working in the corrections industry , like other first responders , have higher rates of suicide . Statistics show corrections staff have a 39 % higher rate of suicide compared to any other occupation . Zero Suicide Initiative is a strategic initiative implemented in July 2025 for the Missouri Department of Corrections . Due to the importance of suicide prevention education , the department piloted Living Works ASIST training . The course was well - vetted through the strategic initiative and determined it to be superior for the intended purpose and is a best practice by experts in the mental health industry , including the Education Development Center , the sponsor for the national Zero Suicide Initiative . It is necessary for the department to continue offering the ASIST training to specific positions within the department to conduct suicide risk screenings and appropriate intervention . |
