2 . 1 . GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 2 . 1 . 1 . Materials shall be non - combustible and suitable for wildfire defensible space applications . 2 . 1 . 2 . Materials shall be clean , inert , and free of organic matter . 2 . 1 . 3 . Materials shall be suitable for placement at approximately ¾ inch compacted depth , unless otherwise directed by the County . 2 . 1 . 4 . All materials shall not exceed 1½ inches nominal diameter . 2 . 1 . 5 . Decorative , polished , oversized , or ornamental stone is not permitted . 2 . 2 . CRUSHED ROCK ( PRIMARY MATERIAL ) 2 . 2 . 1 Size : Crushed rock materials shall be approximately ⅜ ” minus to ¾ ” minus ( nominal ). 2 . 2 . 2 Material Type : Crushed limestone , granite , basalt , or other comparable non - combustible mineral aggregate suitable for defensible space applications . 2 . 2 . 3 Performance : Materials shall be suitable for shallow hardscape installation for defensible space purposes , typically placed in a thin layer ( approximately ¾ inch compacted depth ), unless otherwise directed by the County . 2 . 2 . 4 Color : Materials shall be provided in the following general color groups : Natural Gray , Tan / Buff , or Brown / Earthtone . Specialty , polished , or dyed colors are not permitted . 2 . 2 . 5 Quality : Materials shall be clean , inert , and free from organic material , clay , debris , or deleterious substances . 2 . 2 . 6 Application : Materials shall be suitable for landscaping , erosion control , and wildfire defensible space ( Zone 0 ) applications . 2 . 3 MEDIUM STONE 2 . 3 . 1 Size : Medium stone shall be approximately 1 ” to 1½ ” nominal diameter . Stone exceeding 1½ inches is not permitted . 2 . 3 . 2 Material Type : Crushed or naturally rounded non - combustible mineral aggregate , including limestone , granite , basalt , or other comparable stone suitable for defensible space applications . 2 . 3 . 3 Performance : Material shall be suitable for placement and capable of forming a stable , uniform surface when installed at approximately ¾ inch depth . Stone shall not be excessively rounded such that it creates instability or migration under foot traffic . 2 . 3 . 4 Color : Materials shall be provided in neutral , natural earth - tone color groups , including Natural Gray , Tan / Buff , or Brown . Specialty , polished , or dyed colors are not permitted . 2 . 3 . 5 Quality : Materials shall be clean , inert , and free from organic material , clay , debris , or deleterious substances . 2 . 3 . 6 Application : Medium stone may be used in select locations where slightly larger aggregate is desired for durability or visual interest . Crushed rock shall remain the primary hardscape material . Use of this material shall be limited and at the County ’ s discretion only
