A . The Work of Project is defined by the Contract Documents and consists of the following ( Numbered sequence is not necessarily indicative of workflow ) B . Averitt Center Exterior Wall Restoration 1 . Surface Preparation and Vegetation Removal a . Vegetation Removal : Manually cut and remove the ivy . Roots embedded in the mortar should be treated with a biocide and allowed to die off before removal to prevent pulling out loose bricks . b . Mechanical Cleaning : Remove all redundant hardware , metal pins , and the remains of the rotted wood beam visible in the center of the wall . c . Paint / Coating Stripping : Lightly clean the areas with white efflorescence or old paint / staining to ensure a uniform substrate . 2 . Selective Demolition and Brick Replacement a . Unit Replacement : Remove heavily spalled , cracked , or missing bricks ( specifically noted at the corner / edge and the horizontal " void " where the beam was located ). b . Salvage / Sourcing : Provide new or reclaimed " common " bricks that match the existing units in size , color , and compressive strength to ensure thermal compatibility . d . Toothing - In : Integrate new brickwork into the existing field using a " toothing " method to ensure a seamless structural bond . 3 . Joint Preparation ( Raking ) a . Raking : Mechanically or manually rake out deteriorated mortar joints to a minimum depth of one inch or until sound mortar is reached . b . Debris Removal : Clean joints with compressed air or water to remove dust and loose particles prior to repointing . 4 . Repointing ( Tuckpointing ) a . Mortar Selection : Use a breathable , low - strength lime - based mortar ( e . g ., Type N or O ) to match the original composition . * Note : Avoid highstrength Portland cement which can trap moisture and cause the old bricks to crack .
