Description

Description

The Australian Synchrotron (AS) is a world-class research facility operated by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Clayton, Victoria. The facility operates continuously and relies on a central refrigeration system to provide chilled water for critical facility heat loads, including low-conductivity water (LCW) cooling and HVAC systems. Chiller 1 is one of four chillers serving the primary cooling circuit. It is approximately 22 years old, has accumulated significant run hours and has reached end of life, with spare parts no longer readily available. Replacement is required to restore reliable N+1 cooling redundancy and reduce the risk of loss of critical cooling capacity. The existing system supplies chilled water at approximately 6°C, with return water at approximately 10°C. The condenser water circuit typically enters the chiller at approximately 20°C and leaves at approximately 23°C for heat rejection through the cooling towers.
