Natural resources play a central and strategic role in Africa's development in terms of green and sustainable economic growth, improving living standards, reducing poverty, and strengthening resilience. Indeed, all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the African Developpement Bank’s new 10-year strategy have direct or indirect links with natural capital. Therefore, the importance of natural capital requires that its planning, management, and monitoring be based on sound impact. This also requires their accurate measurement and comprehensive integration into the regular system of national accounts, particularly GDP. Furthermore, the recently adopted 2025 SNA includes enhanced methodology for valuing natural resources, with implications for the Bank’s Green Wealth of Nations (GWN) initiative.   Although the 2025 SNA only includes methodology for valuation of natural resources due to unresolved challenges in the valuation of ecosystems, the focus on natural resources in the 2025 SNA nonetheless presents an opportunity for countries to better measure their natural assets and derive more realistic GDP estimates To that effect, ECST has recruited one individual Consultant with solid background on national accounts to provide technical support to 5 pilot countries on 2025 SNA readiness assessment as part of the 2025-2027 implementation plan of the Africa Natural Capital Accounting Community of Practice (NCA CoP).
