SMASD is currently looking for proposals for ELA Curriculum for K through 8th grade . Required Curriculum Components : Core Instructional Framework ● PA Standards Alignment - Clear evidence that the program meets current PA ELA standards . ● Reading Foundation - Systematic , explicit instruction in phonemic awareness , phonics & decoding with solid foundations through 3rd grade . ● Reading Comprehension and Knowledge Building - Focus on building background knowledge , vocabulary , and the ability to analyze complex texts at an age - appropriate level . ● Reading & Writing Connection - Explicit framework for writing instruction that is integrated with reading and vocabulary development . ● Vocabulary - Instruction and assessment are purposeful and research based . Student Engagement and Environment ● Social / Personal Dimension - Tools for relationship building , gaining student trust , and creating a collaborative reading environment . ● Metacognitive Conversation - Opportunities for students to “ think aloud ”, use sentence frames for academic talk and reflect on their own reading processes . ● Culturally Responsive - Stories come from a wide range of authors , cultures , and identities . They feature culturally relevant themes & grade level appropriate topics . ● Authentic Literacy Tasks - Literacy tasks are relevant and developmentally appropriate real - world situations . Assessment & Adaptive Support ● Differentiation & Intervention - Clearly supports both struggling and advanced readers with built in intervention materials . Small group instructional guidance with intent to scaffold support up to grade level . ● Assessment & Data Usage - Robust tools for both formative and summative assessments to target specific student needs . Easily accessible reports to provide valuable formative data to guide instruction to improve learners ’ outcomes . Instructional recommendations to align internal and external assessments .
