Description

The purpose of this project is to provide Michigan state agencies with an independent , Michigan - specific analysis that supports informed decision - making on energy affordability , system reliability , and strategic planning during the transition outlined in the MHCP . The project will integrate building electrification , emerging large electric loads , industrial decarbonization , and the planned long - term decline in natural gas use into a unified framework that identifies cost - effective , equitable , and practical pathways for the state . This project is intended to generate actionable modeling and policy insights that enable Michigan to manage the affordability challenges associated with both rising electric demand and declining gas throughput . It will examine how electrification strategies , thermal energy networks , flexible loads , rate design options , and targeted gas system contraction can be sequenced to maintain customer affordability while supporting the state ’ s decarbonization goals .
