All filter gravel shall be NSF certified by the appropriate certifying authority . GRADATION OF GRAVEL ; Two gradations of gravel are being purchased for this application , denoted in the Requisition as MEDIUM FINE and FINE and will be defined as : RETAINED ON SIEVE SIZE PASSING SIEVE SIZE ANGULAR PIECE % MAXIMUM ; MEDIUM FINE 1 / 8 inch 1 / 4 inch 25 %; FINE # 16 sieve 1 / 8 inch 25 %; PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GRAVEL ; All filter gravel shall be composed of quartz , flint granite , quartzite , or other siliceous or igneous material . Filter gravel shall be visually free bf shale , mica , silt , clay , dirt and organic impurities . The saturated surface - dry specific gravity of the filter gravel shall not be less than 2 . 50 and not more than 1 % by weight and shall have a specific gravity of 2 . 25 or less . Individual pieces of gravel shall be reasonably smooth and well rounded , with a thickness not less than one - third the length or one - half the breadth . No more than 2 % of the pieces shall he thin , flat , or long in which the largest dimension exceeds five times the smallest dimension . Angular pieces with sharp corners , or with more than one fracture plane , shall not exceed 25 % for each designated size gradation . The acid solubility shall not exceed 17 . 5 % for the graduation specified . The gravel graduations stipulated above are based on ASTM square hole sieves . Filter gravel shall be screened through square opening sieves conforming to AWWA BIOO Appendix B . Not more than 8 % of the weight of any size of filter gravel shall be finer or coarser than the designated size limits .
