Please note : This is a Sole Source Notification . The Department of Health and Senior Services ( DHSS ) requires contracts to provide comprehensive pediatric medical services related to the treatment of sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathy disorders to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with youth children affected with sickle cell disease and to reduce the burden of chronic disease among Missouri ’ s population . The Children ’ s Mercy Hospital , St . Louis University , and Washington University are the only feasible sources from which is acquire pediatric hemoglobinopathy resource center services , as these established hemoglobinopathy centers are the only ones known in the state to have the medical expertise , infrastructure , equipment , capability , and experience necessary to provide the services required . Among the requirements for contracting , are the provision of comprehensive pediatric medical services related to the treatment of sickle cell disease and related disorders , including inpatient and outpatient care , counseling , medical referral , follow - up , outreach and education services ; and a medical team with clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of sickle syndromes and in providing care to affected children and adolescents .
