Insulate the Foundation Wall from Inside : 1 . Remove dust , fiberglass insulation , and debris from the band joist are on both exterior walls . Install a release layer , such as plastic sheeting , so that spray foam does not adhere directly to the wood . 2 . Clear the walls and move oil tanks to get access to the exterior walls . If the tanks cannot be moved , slide XPS insulation in at the thickness that can be friction fit between the tanks and the foundation . 3 . Glue at least 3 ” thickness of rigid expanded polystyrene ( XPS ) foam board to the wall by setting it on the floor and going up to the top of the foundation wall . Retain the existing vapor barrier to act as a release layer for the adhesive . Be cautious about the glue you select ; get a construction adhesive that is formulated for XPS insulation . If it is easier , the wall can be spray foamed at 3 ” thickness down to the bottom of the foundation , however , XPS may still be needed behind the oil tanks . 4 . Spray foam the band joists to 3 ” thickness in the band joists and lap over the top of the XPS insulation . 5 . Coat all insulation with a 15 - minute thermal barrier . Foam Over Vent : The vent can be permanently covered over with spray foam or covered by a rigid foam plug wrapped in polyethylene sheeting like a present that is then foamed in place as shown below .
