The environmental footprint pilot phase closes at the end of 2017 with approval of final product category/organisation sectoral rules (PEFCR/OEFSR). Around 24 documents will be ready for use by interested organisations. Results of the pilot phase will feed into the consideration of possible policy options. The earliest any conceivable follow-up structure under Commission auspices (if any) is expected is at the end of 2020. A governance structure is needed for the ‘transition period’ (1.1.2018 to 31.12.2020). The Commission will (i) ensure additional documents are developed in compliance with the most updated EF methods and guidance; (ii) monitor, supervise the correct implementation of rules developed; (iii) continue discussions on developments regarding environmental footprint and significant technical questions related to PEF/OEF implementation methods and existing rules.
