The work consists of removing and disposing of trees , removing and disposing of the respective stumps , and trimming trees as noted in the Log of Work and as directed by the Engineer . Remove stumps by chipping to a depth of at least 12 inches below the existing ground surface . Backfill removal areas in non - residential areas with wood chips or approved granular material . Backfill removal areas in residential yards with topsoil , grass seed , fertilizer , and mulch . Stumps that are determined by the Engineer to be inaccessible to a stump grinder shall be cut flush to the existing ground surface and chemically treated within 2 hours of the cut to prevent regrowth . The chemicals used will be at the Contractor ’ s option provided the manufacturer recommends the product for the above use . Safety Data Sheets shall be provided to the crew and the Engineer prior to use . Tree trimming consists of cutting and disposing of all limbs located within 20 feet of the centerline of the road to a minimum height of 20 feet above the pavement surface . All cuts shall be made as close as possible to the trunk or parent limb , without cutting into the branch collar or leaving a protruding stub . Bark on the edge of all pruning cuts should remain firmly attached . All branches too large to support with one hand shall be precut to avoid splitting or tearing of the bark . Where necessary , ropes or other equipment should be used to lower large branches or stubs to the ground . All burnable wood , excluding brush , from the tree removals shall be offered to the property owner . If the property owner wants the burnable wood , cut the wood into lengths of eight feet and stack it outside of the right - of - way . If the property owner does not want the burnable wood , the Contractor shall dispose of the material .
